UNC Wilmington Nursing Student is Recipient of SENCLand Chapter, MOAA and and New Hanover Regional Medical Center Scholarship

Matthew Riley, Marine Corps Veteran, and student in the Nursing department is the recipient of the first SENCLand Chapter, MOAA and New Hanover Regional Medical Center Scholarship in the amount of $700. Matthew was chosen from several well deserving students in the Allied Health areas of study. Scholarship criteria includes military veteran honorably discharged, student in the Allied Health field, and a GPA of 2.5 or greater. Jim Brumit, President, SENCLand Chapter, MOAA presented the check to a very happy, deserving, humble Matthew Riley. Lauren Carter, US Army National Guard and Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran, and student in the Practical Nursing department is the recipient of the first SENCLand Chapter, MOAA and New Hanover Regional Medical Center Scholarship in the amount of $700. Lauren was chosen from several well deserving students in the Allied Health areas of study. Scholarship criteria includes military veteran honorably discharged, student in the Allied Health field, and a GPA of 2.5 or greater. Jim Brumit presented the check to a very deserving Lauren Carter. Scott Springer, Marine Corps Veteran, and student in the Occupational Therapy department is the recipient of the first SENCLand Chapter, MOAA and New Hanover Regional Medical Center Scholarship in the amount of $700. Scott was chosen from several well deserving students in the Allied Health areas of study. Scholarship criteria includes military veteran honorably discharged, student in the Allied Health field, and a GPA of 2.5 or greater. Jim Brumit, SENCLand Chapter, MOAA President and Chrissy Sanford 2nd VP, SENCLand Chapter, MOAA presented the check to a very deserving Scott Springer. Also in attendance were Dr. Jennifer K.Renshaw, OTA Program Director; Ray Charfauros, Veterans co-ordinator; and Rachael Cavenaugh, Director of Financial aid and Veterans Services.

On June 2, 2017 at Hugh MacRae Park in Wilmington, NC, six area high school seniors were awarded a total of $8500 for university and college expenses by the Military Officers Association of America, SENCLAND Chapter NC-07. Pictured from left to right are: LTC (Ret) Lee Hanna, Scholarship Chairman, Rebecca Lindsey (North Brunswick HS) will attend LSU, majoring in political science and history, Mavelin Zavala (James Kenan HS) Meredith Univ. majoring in civil engineering/interior design, Geraldine Baldelomar (LeJeune HS) Coastal Carolina CC to study computer science, Kyle Miller (West Brunswick HS) NCSU majoring in chemistry/biology, Katia Cabrera (James Kenan HS) Wingate Univ. majoring in pre-pharmacy, Thomas Wallace (North Brunswick HS) NCSU majoring in electrical engineering, and COL (Ret) Jim Brumit, SENCLAND Chapter President.

115 Members and Guests Attended BBQ at Hugh McRae Park June 3, 2016

Vic Olsen from Ashley HS NJROTC won the top scholarship of $3000. He will attend NC State. Jacob Beamer from North Brunswick HS JROTC won the second award of $2000 and will attend Belmont Abbey College. Miss Hayden Huffman from West Brunswick HS JROTC won the third award for $1500 and will attend UNC Chapel Hill. Alexandria Seabrook from Hoggard HS NJROTC won the fourth award for $1000 and will attend UNC Greensboro.

Parents, family members, and JROTC Instructors from all four High Schools were in attendance to honor the dedication and excellent efforts demonstrated by all four highly qualified recipients.

Ariella Bode and Cadet Joseph Johnson Honored at BBQ

The Outreach Committee of the SENCland Chapter of The Military Officers Association of America is please to announce the winners of the 2015 scholarships. The scholarships are awarded annually to cadets in the JROTC programs in New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Columbus, and Onslow Counties or children of honorably discharged or active duty service members. This year a $3,000 scholarship is presented to Ariella Bode, a senior at White Oak High School in Onslow County and the daughter of an Army Master Sergeant stationed at Ft. Bragg. Ariella will attend Texas A&M University to study Bio-medical Engineering. She will be a member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M. Ariella ranks 8 out of 259 seniors at White Oak. Due to her father’s military duties she has moved 7 times between her 5th grade year and her 11th grade year.

The award of $2500 is presented to Joseph Johnson of the JROTC battalion at North Brunswick High School in Leland. Joseph will attend Virginia Military Institute (VMI) on a 3 year ROTC scholarship. Joseph ranks 12 out of 215 seniors at North Brunswick. He is a member of North Brunswick”s nationally ranked air rifle team.
