About Our Chapter

The Southeastern Chapter (SENCLAND) of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) was officially chartered on 30 June 1973 as an affiliate of the national organization of The Retired Officers Association (TROA) and was re-chartered as an affiliate to MOAA when the name changed in 2003. Located along the beautiful southeastern coast of North Carolina, SENCLAND currently has 260 members in New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Columbus, Onslow, and Duplin counties. We represent all 7 uniformed services and our members are either currently serving, or former, retired officers and their survivors. We are a vibrant organization with members continually demonstrating their commitment to MOAA and our local community. An active member of the MOAA North Carolina Council of Chapters and the New Hanover County Veterans Council, SENCLAND enjoys a reputation of outstanding camaraderie, leadership, service, community, and outstanding programs.

Chapter Activities

The SENCLAND chapter has meetings with outstanding programs ten months of the year, usually the first Tuesday of the month. The chapter meeting in June is traditionally a Pig Picking (BBQ) activity at Long Leaf Park in Wilmington where we include our Scholarship winners and their families. The May meeting is held in Southport. All other meetings are held at the Bluewater Grill in Wrightsville Beach. Our Board meets several times during the year. The monthly newsletter is available electronically and in hard copy and is published 10 times a year. Our chapter supports 18 local JROTC programs with leadership awards and provides scholarships each year to JROTC college bound students and assists veteran organizations locally with donations.

SENCLAND History

History of SENCLAND Chapter and List of Past Presidents

Written by Bob Jones, LTC, USA-Ret

SENCLAND CHAPTER HISTORY

SENCLAND chapter, TROA (The Retired Officers Association of America), was born in 1973 when Col James Johnson, his wife Matie; LtCol H.R. Kelly, his wife Jeanne; Col Herbert Bridges, his wife Jean; CAPT Louis Muery, his wife Mary Lou; Lt Col Tom Olson and his wife Lois met at Bradley Creek Marina and started the ball rolling. After several organizational meetings and the addition of a number of other interested officers and their wives, the SENCLAND Chapter was officially charted on 30 June 1973 as an affiliate of the national organization of The Retired Officers Association of America (TROA). Col Jim Johnson served as our first President and LtCol Tom Olson was the Secretary-Treasurer. Over the ensuing forty years the chapter has continued to grow with our current enrollment hovering around 250 members.

The name of the Retired Officers Association of America (TROA) was changed in 2003 to the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and the SENCLAND chapter was re-chartered as an affiliate of that organization.
