"We’re glad to be able to offer more support this year and host a few of the events for this year’s July 4th celebration. We’re looking forward to gathering with friends and family, with health and safety in mind, to celebrate Independence Day," said Ken Thomas, Mayor, Town of Oak Island.

2021 Festival Calendar

For over 220 years Southport has celebrated our nation’s independence in full fare. The history of North Carolina’s Fourth of July Festival celebration was first recorded in a newspaper in 1795. Now the event has grown to attract over 60,000 visitors each year. Through the years it’s the efforts of civic groups and citizens that has allowed the festival to evolve to encompass a wide variety of American celebration traditions.

Last year’s official NC 4th of July Festival events were completely virtual due to the need for instituting public health mitigation measures with guidelines for gathering, public events and social distancing set by the CDC, the state of North Carolina and local government. Virtual events may still be viewed online at the festival’s website and provide a great deal of depth and history.

Current CDC guidance is favorable for resuming in person events. It is time once again to gather within appropriate safety measures, to celebrate the nation’s independence. We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors. For several months the committee has worked to create a schedule of events that could be held should live events resume. It is with enthusiasm that a NC 4th of July Festival Events Calendar has been posted along with this press release.

In light of the pandemic, some events will be relocated to sites that allow social distancing, other events revised to reduce crowd sizes and some events postponed until 2022.

Locations are varied to enhance social distances and are set for the year 2021, with the hopes that a full calendar and traditional locations will be available in 2022.

The festivities kick-off with the traditional Oak Island Beach Day on July 1st. A day full of games, entertainment and food hosted by the Town of Oak Island and administered by the Oak Island Recreation Department Staff begins at 8 a.m. You won’t want to miss this fun filled day in the sun. This year’s entertainment following the annual Shag Contest is the sought-after band, Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot. The day ends with the annual Beach Day & Oak Island Fireworks at 9 p.m., there is plenty of room to social distance on the miles of beaches around the Oak Island Pier.

Saturday and Sunday, July 3 & 4, events included the Red, White and Blue Car Show, Children’s Entertainment, Arts & Crafts Market, Entertainment, Flag Retirement & Flag Raising Ceremonies, UPWA Live Pro Wrestling, Freedom Flotilla, Reading of the Declaration of Independence and the festivities will conclude on July 4th with a Fireworks Display fired from the Oak Island Pier and seen for miles around.

A special thank you to the City of Southport and Town of Oak Island. Their continual guidance and assistance has been invaluable to the Festival Committee as alternatives have been explored. “We’re glad to be able to offer more support this year and host a few of the events for this year’s July 4th celebration. We’re looking forward to gathering with friends and family, with health and safety in mind, to celebrate Independence Day, said Ken Thomas, Mayor, Town of Oak Island.

NC 4th of July Festival Co-Chair, Trisha Howarth: “The festival committee appreciates the Town of Oak Island’s willingness to expand the number of events held on Oak Island in 2021. We are very privileged to live in a community that comes together in challenging times to foster good outcomes. I am delighted that there will be in person events in 2021, and look forward to a return of a full schedule of events in 2022.”

The additional space that locations in Oak Island can provide along with events scheduled at local businesses in Southport help to dispersing crowd sizes while also giving everyone a chance to enjoy some of the annual traditions. It is the anticipation that all events will return with the usual locations in 2022 to include the much-missed Festival Parade.

We invite you to join us July 1, July 3 and July 4, 2021 celebrating our 226th year.
